Rapid start emergency back up power supply configured with units on site to support critical functions during maintenance and repair
Local Municipalities in the Eastern and Western Cape required back up power to ensure the continuous operations of the pumps at a number of Waste Water Treatment Facilities.
The Wellington WWTW facility processes approximately 16million litres of sewerage each day, disinfecting it for safe discharge back into the environment thereby protecting the environment, downstream water users and alleviating the strain on the scarce supply of clean water.
Local consultants to the Municipalities called for tenders and Servelec were appointed electrical contractor under the Mechanical Contractors.
The power solutions put forward had to comply to rigid specifications for robust, high quality engineering since many corrosive materials are present in the plant rooms.
WWTW’s rely on machinery of various sizes operating simultaneously, so the generators on site had to be capable of supporting many motor sizes starting at different steps.
Remote monitoring of all aspects of the plants mechanical operations is essential since a sewerage spill would have significant health and safety implications.
Servelec won the three Municipality tenders.
HIMOINSA open skid 500kVA and 300kVA units were supplied, with additional bespoke, specially modified parts, including ATS Panels designed and manufactured by Servelec, to enable total plant automation.
All units were equipped with the HIMOINSA remote monitoring software to monitor fuel levels, in addition to the HIMOINSA generator set controllers being configured to interface fully with the Municipalities SCADA, which monitors every aspect of the plants activity. Adroit SCADA were implemented by Servelec Engineering and Design (PTY) Ltd.
To ensure flexibility of both engineering and financial solutions, HIMOINSA design and vertically manufacture units with a choice of engines. For these applications Scania and Iveco engines were used. Scania open skid units have exceptional capability for handling multiple, simultaneous step-loads whilst Iveco were the choice for the non-corrosive plant.

The ability to remotely monitor and control the generator sets was of vital importance to the Municipalities since so many systems are reliant on continuous power. In addition to Automatic Start / Stop and Emergency stop functions, HIMOINSA’s remote monitoring software was installed on all units.
