Located in the Northern Cape, the Anglo American mine, Kolomela, mines iron ore. Iron ore is the main component in steel and the excellent quality of the lump iron ore from Kolomela, due to its high iron content making it particularly strong and therefore valuable; is an asset in high demand across sectors such as construction, engineering and infrastructure development worldwide.
Anglo-American at Kolomela needed a lighting tower unit that would meet the mines rigorous specification requirements. Talisman Hire in Kathu and HIMOINSA Southern Africa worked closely with HIMOINSA technical teams globally to develop a truly bespoke unit, specifically manufactured to order at the HIMOINSA factory, incorporating changes to the standard unit specification which were covered under factory warranty.
The bespoke HIMOINSA Apolo Box Lighting Tower met all criteria and Talisman Hire Kathu won the Anglo-American tender to supply light on site. Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry.
The objective of the project was to provide a solution that would meet the clients, Anglo American, requirement for 20 Lux at 100m light on site in Kathu. Units need to run automatically as soon as the natural light drops, be reliable and resilient to the tough conditions on site, incorporate remote monitoring devices and be trailer mounted in addition to meeting all the stringent health and safety requirements on site. Remote monitoring software must track exact location in order to avoid damage to the units during mine blasts and incorporate pre-set alarms for preventative maintenance and repairs to ensure continuous operations and therefore prevent penalties.
HIMOINSA Southern Africa developed three prototype units locally at the Johannesburg sales and service facility. Following testing and approval the factories were briefed to manufacture a bespoke mining specification unit matching the client's requirements.
The bespoke design not only met but exceeded the specified tender requirements.
Units run to 500hour service intervals.
Trailers incorporate additional HIMOINSA designed safety features. To prevent accidents the units will not start unless the trailer outriggers are fully deployed.

Mine compliant safety requirement with additional Anglo-American requirement for a single axel trailer with brake line. Outriggers modified for safety to ensure units cannot operate unless the trailers stability is maximised.
Automatic Day-light Start / Stop Sensor
In order to ensure maximum efficiency on site the automatic sensor starts the unit as soon as light fades. To keep running costs down the unit shuts off when light is sufficient to operate efficient lights improve light quality (CRI) and reduce maintenance and energy costs - efficiency savings of up to 75% over metal halide.
Battery Isolator
Additional Safety benefit. The unit cannot be switched on in error therefore preventing operation during transportation and servicing.
